The Happiness Run for Clean Water and Gender Equality is an initiative I created because it addresses several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like #3 Good Health and Wellbeing, #5 Gender Equality, #6 Clean Water and Sanitation, and #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.
By raising enough money to purchase and install a Nanofilter Water Centre that provides communities with up to 1200L of clean water daily, we can significantly improve health outcomes of those with no access to clean water by reducing waterborne illnesses in the community. By employing a female entrepreneur with a living wage of up to $40 CAD per day, we will empower women and promote gender equality. Additionally, as part of the fee to purchase the Nanofilter Water Centre, there will be entrepreneurship training and support offered to the female entrepreneur chosen to run it. Employing women fosters economic growth and helps lift families out of poverty through sustainable employment.
My daily goal of running 6km symbolizes the average distance women and children in developing countries walk to fetch water each day and highlights the challenges faced by Tanzanian families due to inadequate access to clean water. This initiative not only highlights the importance of clean water and sanitation systems for public health and overall well-being but also reduces the environmental impact of single-use plastics which harm the earth.
As a Canadian girl with a goal to be a pediatric allergist, I find it inspiring that the women managing the water kiosks serve as health educators within their communities, further enhancing the project’s positive impact.
